NUCLEAR FREE ANISHINAABE AKI RALLY
Grassy Narrows First Nation, Fort William First Nation, and allies called upon on all supporters to gather in Thunder Bay on July 4th in Waverley Park to oppose the proposed nuclear waste storage site near Ignace. The rally amplified the voices of those who have long said “no” to nuclear waste in the Wabigoon River watershed.
Fort William stands strongly opposed to the transportation of nuclear waste through their territory while Grassy Narrows leaders have clearly stated that this project puts the people of Grassy Narrows in grave danger.
Environment North helped to promote the rally and had a display table at Waverley park.
About 400 people gathered in Waverley Park to say “Gaawin!” or “No” to nuclear waste. There were a number of empowering speeches. The rally included a march down to Marina Park. The event closed with traditional singing and drumming and an offering to the water, a reminder that the purpose of the rally was also to protect the sacred, “Niibi” (the water) as well as “Aki” (the land).
