Black Bay Five Mile Creek

Seven groups have expressed strong concerns about the impacts of the proposed forest industry work on the remote nature and ecological integrity of the Black Bay Peninsula Enhanced Management Area.  Concerns were originally raised in 2023 and have been raised again in a recent letter to the Ministry of Natural Resources.

From the letter:

"Ontario Nature and the undersigned organizations are writing to follow up on our correspondence from January and March of 2023 regarding the Black Bay Peninsula Five-Mile Creek Crossing Approach Enhancements proposal and the resulting Environmental Impact Study (EIS) by Greenmantle Forest Inc., holder of the Sustainable Forest Licence (SFL) for the Lakehead Forest."

The letter asks questions and expresses concerns about:

  • receiving a full copy of the Environmental Impact Assessment.
  • the possibility "that the work to enhance the Five-Mile Creek crossing approach will be moving forward this winter without an amendment to the Forest Management Plan and without consultation with Lakehead Forest’s Local Citizens Committee or the general public"
  • "how the road will remain a winter road, and how public use will be restricted and monitored to ensure the enhancements do not inadvertently increase public access."

Discussions are taking place between Ontario Nature, the Ministry and Greenmantle, Inc. and we wil update when there are significant developments.
