Three decades ago, nuclear waste disposal was a hot topic Northwestern Ontario. Test drilling was underway in Atikokan, with support by some local businesses but major opposition was expressed by people in Atikokan and other communities along proposed transportation routes. Nearly 25,000 people signed petitions opposing the transport and disposal of nuclear waste within the region.
