Join Us at the Environment North AGM

Environment North invites the public to its Annual General Meeting on Thursday, April 25th to hear Dr. Mark Winfield and Laura Tanguay speak on “The Consequences of Nuclear Energy in Ontario – Our Home”. This informative presentation will take place at 7:00 PM at Current River Community Centre, 450 Dewe Ave.

The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) is planning to select a site later this year.

The two options under consideration for the proposed deep geological repository (DGR) are the Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation-Ignace area, about 250 kilometres northwest of Thunder Bay and the Saugeen Ojibway Nation-South Bruce area, about 130 kilometres northwest of London. To date, 60,000 tonnes of radioactive nuclear fuel waste have been generated. According to the NWMO, this highly radioactive waste will take a minimum of 45 years to be transported by truck.

This proposal affects all Ontarians. 

Dr. Winfield is a professor in the Faculty of Environmental and Urban Change at York University, and co-chair of the Faculty’s Sustainable Energy Initiative. He has published articles, book chapters and reports on a wide range of climate change, environment and energy policy topics. Dr Winfield is also the co-editor of Sustainable Energy Transitions for Canada.

Laura Tanguay, is a Ph.D. candidate in the Faculty of Environmental and Urban Change at York University. Her dissertation addresses environmental justice, and examines the processes for establishing consent for nuclear waste sitings, with a case study on the near-surface disposal facility in Chalk River, Ontario. She has also co-edited a report on Operationalizing Indigenous-led Impact Assessments.

Resolution: “We, the undersigned, citizens, residents and Indigenous peoples of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to require the Nuclear Waste Management Organization to demonstrate that it has the consent of residents and communities, including First Nations and Treaty Organizations, along the transportation route and in the region of and downstream of the candidate repository site(s) before selecting a site.”
